IOM Information

The International One Metre (IOM) is the fastest growing class of radio controlled yachts, and is administered by the ISAF. The IOM yachts are designed to make an affordable way to compete and to enjoy the sport. The class rules are very tight and limit the yachts to two channel control and three one design rigs. Hull, ballast, draught and construction materials are also limited. There is however, sufficient freedom in different hull, fin and rudder shapes to be developed.

The International One Metre is sailed in all states of Australia, and a recent world championship in Europe attracted 80 competitors from 15 different countries including 5 from Australia. In 2005, Craig Smith from Australia won the World Championships and then in 2007, Brad Gibson from Australia won the World Championship with Craig Smith achieving third place. The tight rules have the effect of allowing beginners to produce a competitive yacht, and keep costs down. The maximum length is 1 metre. Mast height is 1.7m and the minimum weight is 4.0kg.

There are some excellent web sites which give all sorts of information on the class.  The best of these are listed in our Links page.
